Flooding In Vermont - Summer 2011

]]>I drove from Ohio to my parents home in Vermont, Monday, August 27, 2011. I had just missed the tail end of Irene and arrived home that evening, aware that there was some damage in my state but unaware of the breadth and scale of it. I woke the next day and called my friend at the Herald of Randolph, Tim Calabro. I asked Tim if he needed help documenting the damage for the paper. I found myself driving through places I have been through hundreds of times, except this time the damage from flooding had rendered these places alien and unwelcoming. Over the next few days I documented the aftermath of Irene and spoke with many people in communities I had worked in as an aspiring photojournalist. It was amazing to see the resilience and sense of community that came in the wake of the flood. There is a long road to recovery but I have faith in the resolve of the people and communities that I was fortunate enough to document.

]]>Last week Sanduky's Post 83 played in the 2011 Ohio American Legion Championship in Lancaster, Ohio. I was hired for the assignment by the Sandusky Register. The Officials were kind enough to let me stand on the sideline of the field next to the dugout, allowing me to shoot and move more freely.

]]>Senate Bill 5 has been divisive in angering and awakening public sector unions and has prompted a large organized response from union workers all over Ohio. Although Senate Bill 5's detractors could not sway the Ohio Senate from passing the bill, they have resolved to preserver for a repeal of the bill. Saturday, thousands gathered to show their support for a repeal of the bill in Columbus. Firefighters, police officers, school teachers and many other public sector workers took to the stage erected in front of the Statehouse to voice their concerns about what they call an assault on the middle class. "We are Ohio" was chanted by the speakers and crowd during most of the day, hoping to illustrate their point that without their labor, Ohio wouldn't be the same.

]]>I had the good fortune of being assigned to cover an anti-senate bill 5 protest held at the capitol building in Columbus Ohio. My day started at 5 am when I hitched a ride with the UAW local 913 union members. The photo gods smiled upon me; the light was glorious and the turnout the largest protest they have seen thus far. I am honored to have had the opportunity to photograph and event that will affect such a large number of American laborers.

Halloween in Athens, 2010

]]>For this years 2010 Athens Halloween Block party in I decided to take a different approach. Instead of shooting the event solo with a strobe in hand trying to capture candid moments I decided to venture out with an umbrella, a strobe and a friend. Greg Roberts was my man-stand. Greg was a critical part of lighting my pictures because there was no way a light stand would survive on court street with thousands of inebriated party goers meandering on Court street. Greg and I were quite the pair. I was dressed as a banana in denim disco suit with Greg as my trustee zombie companion. We wondered down court street in search of party goers on the street that we then shot portraits of at the location we found them.
